While alarm bells were ringing across the border, more sonorous sounds were heard in Arnhem, where Geertruida Bosmans, (Truus) finally made up her mind. Thirty four year old Truus married the two year younger Dirk van Leeuwen in Arnhem 25th April 1923. Earlier a friendship had blossomed when Dirk had a haircut in Antoon’s salon at 79 Oranje Street in Arnhem. Facing across behind the counter, stood jolly Truus assisting her younger brother Antoon, in selling smoking articles. Behind the door on the left Antoon, a tall unknown, Geertruida (Truus) and their widowed mother Anna Bosmans-Meijsen.Antoon just opened this new store in West Arnhem, it seemed that his older sister Nicolene who had a hat shop a few hundred metres further, uphill the road, had a helping hand in his endeavour. The suburb by the name of Lombok was situated between the river Rhine in the South and the railway line at the Northern end, and flanked by the jail towards the west and St. Elisabeth Gasthuis hospital.
The suburb foundations were laid in 1894, first with some impressive villas, but soon it was noticed the well to do didn’t like the idea of living that close to the jail build earlier, so the Arnhem councillors decided to build housing for the working class instead. At that time a war was waged on the Bali and Lombok islands in the Netherlands East-Indies between Hindus and Muslims, so Holland sent a punitive expedition. Many villages were destroyed and lives lost. Those events made a big impact, the newspapers were full of news about the turmoil, many neighbourhoods and real estate were named after Lombok because of it.
