In memoriam Bernard J. Leferink, portrait drawn by his son Frans

Early in November 1935 Marie got the word that her father was in a bad way, he was for a long time suffering with bronchitis. I don’t know if our mum had the time or was in a position to leave her young family behind to visit her sick father all the way in Enschede and if she was able to see him before he died from pneumonia, on November 15th. At that time a train journey from Arnhem to Enschede, about 86 kilometres, would take about a couple of hours by steam train. However Marie and Antoon made it to the funeral, somehow the sisters of Antoon stepped in and kept an eye on the little ones and the shop for the day.
