Bernard Leferink with Ben his first son

Mum's elder brother Bernard married Francisca Milani and here is the proud father with his son Ben.
Bernard was a engine driver with the Dutch Railways. Besides that occupation, he also ran a tobacco shop on the Hoefkade in The Haque.
Older railroad men speak still with respect about the masters from those long bygone days, when the steam locomotives controlled the tracks.
Master was the title of an engineer of a steamtrain and they were addressed as such.
The training to be an engineer on the steam train lasted approximately 9 years.
These locomotives were dreadfully strong, but consumed also a lot of fuel. For a ride from The Hague, Bernard's home town, to Enschede for instance, this loc consumed gladly over 6 tons of coal.
