Because of the slope of the land we decided to level the site a bit, instead of raising the height of the foundation. We took every opportunity to work on the block, came all the way cycling from East Bentleigh, a distance of about 5 miles (8km). We had the narrow road just about to ourselves, there was hardly any traffic, we could count the cars we came across on one hand. Such a different picture now, 60 years later, a four lane road with thousands cars speeding, too dangerous to be on a bicycle now.
