Springvale station and its red rattler train ready to depart for the city

Our first journey from Melbourne to the suburb of Springvale became a discovery tour. We had not seen such old trains before, heck they made a lot of noise and were drafty as well. Passing Richmond we were flabbergasted to come across so many ramshackle houses with galvanised roofs often rusted. The blocks of land were so small, unbelievable, in a country so large with so much space. It came as a bit of a shock, after all the glowing booklets we read, given to us by the Australian embassy in The Haque before
