Springvale main street in the early fifties.
A south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, but the very first impression was that of arriving in a bush-town, with so many unmade roads and quite a few who were tarred had plenty of potholes, to rattle your bones. Another eye opener was the sight of so many weaterboard houses, but most were owner occupied in contrast with the Dutch housing scene, were most dwellers paid rent. We soon came to value the numerous milkbars and discovered new unheard off drinks like sarsparella and flavoured milkshakes. Listen to the sounds of the juke-box with, 'Hey there' by Rosemary Clooney, 'The Great Pretender' by the Platters and 'Don't be cruel' by Elvis.
