Out of tune

It took the enemy only five days to conquer The Netherlands. Rotterdam was flattened, the Grebbeberg defence line broken through and the Royal Family fled across the North Sea to England.
Germany lost 328 of 1024 planes deployed, these extreme high losses of troops and aircraft had direct consequences for the planned invasion of Britain.

The Reichsmark becomes a means of payment, for one guilder you’ll receive one and half mark.
The whole of the country has to blackout again. Also from Thursday 16th May at midnight The Netherlands has to change over to German summertime. After the nasty storm troopers came the Wehrmacht occupation troops and also the marching bands, goosesteps and warrior songs ‘Und wir fahren gegen Engeland’. (And we sail to England).

On the way to school we were confronted with musical side of the enemy and rather impressed with all that fanfare and robust singing. The Kapellmeister had some keen young listeners that morning. There are others, who at the approach of the militairy band, the musicians rewarded by showing their behind.
