Arnhem station

In peaceful times we would have been dreaming of travel by train to far away places, seeing family and beautiful things, enjoying the sounds of hissing locomotives and the clickety-clack, clickety-clack of the wheels on the track.
But no, we lived in different times.....
At night in bed we could hear the heavy drone of the bomb loaded Lancasters crossing over from Britain to drop their explosives on the German industrial heartland.
As young as we were, we considered that the German homeland deserved this punishment for what they’ve done to our land.
Thus the continuous din was distressing, but at the same time also music to our ears. Hours later you could hear the planes (not all) coming back, in a much higher pitch, now they got rid of their deadly cargo. Some nights the bombs fell much closer to the border, we could hear and even feel the rumble of the explosions in the distant, it went on for hours.
It must have been hell down there on the ground we thought.
